In 2008, Beijing hosted the Summer Olympics and to prepare, China assembled some of the most spectacular and architecturally complex buildings in the world. The crown jewel of these facilities is the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the “Bird’s Nest.” Designed by the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, the Bird’s Nest gets its nickname from the 42,000 tons of exterior steel that is woven together like a nest that rests in front of building’s magnificent curtain wall.
